Canadian Bugs
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, May 06 2012 @ 02:24 PM EDT

Black flies & mosquitoes can be so thick in some areas of northern Ontario
that face netting is required so you won't choke. Locals have built up immunity
to them, possibly inherited, and can walk around in summer clothes - only the
occasional deer fly will bother them. An unaccustomed person standing beside
them on the other hand is a bug-diner with a neon sign. Any exposed skin can
have hundreds of bites in minutes. Blood poisoning and hospitalization to follow.

Worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources north of Thunder Bay one summer.
Been there - had it happen :(

Southern Hemisphere bugs

It's not only the northern hemisphere that has bugs as anyone who has traveled
in the West Coast area of New Zealand can testify.

Not sure which is worse, the Mozzies or the sandy flies (now renamed black
flies). I recall trying to work outdoors there one time and with a good coating
of anti bug stuff on hands and face wasn't bitten but was unable to see thru the
cloud of sand flies in front of my face to work.
