and if Oracle succeed in reclaiming it from Google through the SSO concept, then
they will be able to claw back/tax all of the non-Oracle implementations.

This can and does affect you if Oracle succeed

About Compatibility and Fragmentation of Java (Oracle v. Google) ~pj
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, May 07 2012 @ 08:10 AM EDT
I tend to use the IBM JVM. But that is usually because I have some bits of
WebSphere installed on my work systems.

However I recently tried to install some software. It complained that I didn't
have Java 1.6 installed.
This was despite the fact that doing a...

java -version

clearly told me that it was 1.6.

So I installed the latest ORacle 1.6 SDK.
The software still couldn't be installed due to the 'missing Java 1.6' AND me
making sure that my PATH & CLASSPATH's were setup properly.
It turned out that the so called 'run anywhere' Java Installer that was being
used would ONLY work with 32bit Jave 1.6 and oh silly me, I'd installed 64bit
Java 1.6 on my 64Bit system with 32Gb of RAM.

Is Java fragmented?
You bet and it is not Google's doing.
