He misspelled "arcsinh". Make him start over.

PS: Thanks for the link, useless though it is.

The web site is big enough, and my German poor enough, that even after searching for more time than it deserves, I can not say for sure that there is no information there, but neither can I find it.

In other words: Nothing to see here.

An explanation by some math-heads of the formula in that picture
Authored by: bugstomper on Monday, May 28 2012 @ 08:18 PM EDT
Someone on Reddit reverse engineered what he did from the formula in the picture.
Short form: It is an exact (analytic) solution to the differential equations describing the path of a projectile moving in gravity and (quadratic) air resistance.

Not so much the breakthrough that the math-illiterate press breathlessly wrote about, similar solutions were published n 1977, but solid, impressive work for 16 year old who certainly deserved the prize in Germany's top science and math competition for high-schoolers.

Here is a discussion on a math stackexchange forum, which has links to the posts on Reddit:

What are those variables?

I assume g is gravity as a scalar, but what are u and v? Do they parameterize motion in the x and y directions?
