Why can't we just get the video files on a disc in ogg, and then play them
with what we want?
Sure you can, even if they are in a "Lib-Ray" format
because the whole point is keeping the thing open, with no access restrictions,
and it builds on existing open formats. But it also allows you to create a
multimedia presentation from the files, with menus and navigation. This is
adding something, not taking away your freedom.
A physical analogue might be
the difference between a loose stack of photographs, and an album made from
them, which presents them in the order the author wishes, and allows including
annotations and other matter besides the photographs.
(I am not affiliated
with the project in any way. I'm writing this simply because I see the project
(if I have understood its aims correctly) as promising something that so far has
been missing from the open-source landscape. It is something I would like to use
myself.)
