And "LaserRot" does exist for commercially pressed DVDs. It's rare,
but I've got a couple dozen that all played fine when new, and do not play any
more.

Some of them, I've watched decay: first playback great. Second playback, a year
later, some glitches--green squares, MPEG damage, and other ye olde Read Error
symptoms.

Now? "No DISC" on the DVD player's display. And I have quite the
collection of DVD ROM drives to try flaky discs with, even an old and slow RPC-1
unit.

All of the first release James Bond films suffered this failure. The first
pressing of Kentucky Fried Movie. And so on. (And it was really annoying that
the local rental place had the same pressings I did: theirs had failed, too--and
we got to try my copies and theirs on the store machines.)

Bit rot and dd + ddrescue
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, June 19 2012 @ 04:21 AM EDT
Some time ago, I was referring to an oldish archive CD, and
horror of horrors, it would not read in any of my drives.

I sorted it out by using dd if=/dev/sdc of=/tmp/archive bs=2k. This made an
image of the CD's contensts on the hard disk that could be re-burned.

A program directly suitable for this purpose is ddrescue.

All the archives made with that batch of CDs were faulty, and needed to be
re-burned.

Hope this helps
