The Amazing Contents of Steve Wozniak’s Travel Backpack

Every extension cord and USB adapter and USB cable shown here I carry all the time in my backpack with a few exceptions ... I usually say that my backpack weighs 50 pounds.

The downfall of the Vile Monopoly.....
Authored by: tiger99 on Thursday, July 19 2012 @ 08:10 PM EDT
Just seen on BBC TV news, M$ has posted their first ever quarterly loss. This seems to have been due to failure in the online advertising business.

I think that those here who have been estimating the timing of their demise for some years are mostly in the right ball park, considering the poor state of their upcoming products, various on-going anti-trust investigations, as well as, like the entire industry, ever-increasing costs of defending patent disputes. Just watch the share price slide, and slide.....

More news just in, the loss is $500M.

Has IBM given up in the SCO case?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 20 2012 @ 02:52 AM EDT
Has IBM given up in the SCO case?

Or can they accept this stall situation forever without conceding?

Even if they could, is there really any strategic advantage having this case be
on ice for this long?

Website bug.
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 20 2012 @ 02:06 PM EDT
In the text responce boxes (Title, Comment, and post mode) the text colour
is specified, but not the background colour.

I work with a black background, and I doubt I'm the only one.

Black text on a black background is remarkable hard to read or write. (I'm
managing because you also haven't specified the highlight colour)

Best fix would be to stop specifying the text colour.

Software Emulates Lifespan of Entire Organism

Scientists at Stanford University and the J. Craig Venter Institute have developed the first software simulation of an entire organism, a humble single-cell bacterium...

The scientists called it a “first draft” but added that the effort was the first time an entire organism had been modeled in such detail — in this case, all of its 525 genes.

The simulation, which runs on a cluster of 128 computers, models the complete life span of the cell at the molecular level, charting the interactions of 28 categories of molecules — including DNA, RNA, proteins and small molecules known as metabolites that are generated by cell processes.

There - patent that, why don't you. Creates a new, living organism out of your super cluster.

Catchy but quite awful
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 20 2012 @ 08:37 PM EDT
There's no denying Kim Dotcom's Mr President is catchy. It's catchy in a way that the Black Eyed Peas I Gotta Feeling was catchy. So much so that Mr President may well have been Feeling in a former life.

Raspbian - Debian based OS for Raspberry Pi
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 20 2012 @ 10:45 PM EDT
We are pleased to announce the release of our first SD card image based on the
Raspbian distribution.

This is the result of an enormous amount of hard work by Alex and Dom over the
past couple of months, and replaces the existing Debian squeeze image as our
recommended install.

Notably, it is the first official image to take full advantage of the Raspberry
Pi’s floating point hardware for, amongst other things, much faster web
browsing.

Litigation abuse from Pharmaceutical
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, July 21 2012 @ 03:25 AM EDT
The German pharmaceutical Fresenius Kabi is thretening a Danish medical
professor with litigation over an article brought in the New England Journal of
Medicine, which is critical of the potentially fatal side effects to patients of
the pharmaceutical company's blood poisoning drug.
The pharmaceutical is demanding a retractiona and a statement that the scientist
used 'incorrect' data or else face all-out litigation.
The Danish medical science community is shaken by the 'mob-methods' and the
brutal attempt to silence a researcher.

Here's How Copyright Laws Impoverish Wikipedia
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, July 21 2012 @ 11:08 AM EDT
"Copyright law affects to some degree what information makes its way onto
Wikipedia, but what it more strongly affects is how we use that information once
it's there.

In other words, digitizing any knowledge increases an article's text, but only
digitizing public domain images makes articles more frequently updated and
visited."

On Patents
Authored by: Tyro on Saturday, July 21 2012 @ 02:14 PM EDT
From:
The life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, civil engineer
(which I am currently proofreading for Project Gutenberg)

I have been engaged under my father in the working out of
numerous inventions of his, and the taking out of patents on his
account, also in advising others professionally with him, and by
myself, and have been engaged in numerous questions of disputes
resulting from patents; and I have had frequent occasion to use
the patents and inventions of others. I have also had to introduce
improvements of my own without patents, and to defend my use of
them against patents.

I have thus for the last twenty-eight years been in the midst of
everything connected with inventions, and in constant contact with
the operation of the patent laws.

I have been behind the scenes the whole time.

The result has been that I have never taken out a patent myself,
or ever thought of doing so; and I have gradually become convinced
that the whole system of patents is, in the present advanced state of
arts and science and manufactures, productive of immense evil.

I think that it does nothing of what it professes to do, and which
I believe to be impracticable in the present state of things, but that,
on the contrary, it impedes everything it means to encourage, and
ruins the class it professes to protect, and that it is productive of
immense mischief to the public.

I should wish to observe that my opinions are not formed from
any theory, or from any consideration of what are or ought to be the
laws of patents, or whether the details of such laws are capable of
improvement or otherwise; but they are simply the result of a very
long and tolerably intimate knowledge of the operation of the hope
of protection held out, and the operation of that protection such as
it can be when obtained; and these results do not, in my opinion,
depend at all upon any question of whether patents are cheap or
dear, whether they are granted sparingly or profusely, by a simple or
by complicated machinery; it is the ruinous effects upon the class
of inventors, of the false dreams and hopes excited by the system,
and the injurious effect upon improvements of the greater or less
degree of exclusive privilege which is attained, which I have had
constantly before my eyes for so many years, and which must
be increased by any real improvement of the patent laws.

I should, therefore, be an advocate for very cheap patents granted
with great facility, to the poor illiterate workman, as well as to the
rich manufacturer with his counsel and agents, and as well protected
as legal ingenuity can devise.

If the system is good in principle it must bear extension, but I
believe it could not stand a twelvemonth under such a test--every
