"Whoever invents or discovers any new and useful process, or machine, or
manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement of a
process, or machine, or manufacture, or composition of matter, may obtain a
patent therefore, subject to the conditions and requirements of this
title."
Can be rewritten for emphasis as: --Whoever invents or discovers any new and
useful machine, or any new and useful improvement of a machine, may obtain a
patent therefore, subject to the conditions and requirements of this title.--
You stipulated that putting new and useful software on a computer may improve
the value of the computer. In those cases where it does improve the value of
the computer it is an improvement of the computer and is therefore patentable
--subject to the conditions and requirements of 35 USC--.
