Actually you can make it very difficult with some simple techniques. Back it up
and retain monthly backups. On the backups store listings of cryptographically
secure checksums for all the files on the current backup and previous few
backups. To modify a file you would need to modify all the backups after it and
that would be allot of work. The only easy window of opportunity is to modify
the file before it is initially backed up.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

It is certainly possible, provided the right tools are in place. Some of our
customers run a mail archival service, totally separate from from main email
system (Exchange or whatever) that sucks in a copy of every email, in or out,
and stores it on a segregated managed platform that is certified to various
standards. In the UK we have PD0008 which is a set of standards that if
implemented can be used to provide assurance in legal processes that the
electronic documents (emails, scans, etc) are more likely than not to be genuine
and not interfered with (eg providing management processes, showing that WORM
tools were used to manage files so they can be created but not changed, etc).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
