>People were not voting in droves long before 2000.
The percentage of the voting age population that is registered to vote had been
declining since at least the mid-fifties, until the mid-nineties, when states
started "automatic voter registration". Currently, the percentage of
registered voters in the voting age population is close to an all time high.
The percentage of registered voters that votes, is on a decline in those states
where voting by mail is not yet all but mandatory. In those states where it is
all but mandatory, the percentage of registered voters that votes is either
flat, or increasing slightly.
For most voters, the choice is between the candidate that makes a "big
promise", that won't be carried out, or the candidate that has proven that
they will not carry out their "promises".
As that New Zealand premier said (paraphrasing): "Party planks and promises
are nothing more than talking points. To take them seriously, is to be deceived
as to their purpose."
