An individual could do it on their own, without the company's knowledge or
consent.

It reminds me of an example. I think it was in about 1983. You can find some
scant details by googling.

A letter appeared in BYTE magazine pointing out that the boot sector on some
particular Apple software floppy disk had the text "RESIST THE DRAFT",
and then said that "Isn't Apple a little bit early for 1984?".

In the next issue or two (sorry, don't remember specific month/year) there was a
letter from the individual who did it. He admitted he had put the message there
without Apple's knowledge or consent during some previous employment working on
that software product.

The message was removed by Apple.

Apple got mount from BSD, modified it and re-released it under APSL
