A quick look at
https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/10/5/207
indicates the license is in fact GPL.
(The LKML post quoted in the blog post quoted by the great-grandparent of your
post is a patch announcement, so looking for the first patch, which should have
license information is a matter of searching a bit further in the archive).
Checking the mkfs,f2fs license is left as an exercise to the reader.
Haven't looked at the code in detail, but it might be suitable to replace FAT
derivatives indeed. Mind you - it is a new filesystem but they would have had to
carefully sidestep any existant M$ patent issues here to be in the clear. The
file system is based on the log-structured filesystem concept, which I first
came across twenty years ago (DEC had worked on these IIRC). Log file systems
were early journaling filesystems, this might be the real meat of the matter
here. See /208 for an explanation on how f2fs works.
I am not a filesystem guy myself - I'm certain eventual flaws in the concept
will be pointed out shortly (or even have been). After all, it's been posted two
days ago :-)
