Have to disagree about knowledge almost always being good.
Knowledge is neither good nor evil. The USE (or application)
of knowledge might be good or evil, but never knowledge of and
by itself.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

No, Gnostic in this context was to make a satirical comparison between
Gnosticism and the Gnostics who believed that the Bible was written in a secret
code (and only they of course had the inside knowledge to decode it), and the
Law and lawyers (the meaning of "is").
Regarding slavery, remember the lower court jury based upon the evidence freed
Dred Scott, the higher courts re-enslaved him on a technicality and at least
partially contributed to the Civil War.
Prohibition was passed partially as a consequence of good intentions and World
War I Hysteria. The establishment was quite happy with it, but because of the
unintended consequences, by public demand (not the Courts) was removed.
And of course Women's Suffrage had a long history of public action by
disenfranchised women and male supporters before the public became informed. It
then became a political issue of fairness and was passed.
So, given time and and adequate information, I guess I do trust the public to
make fair decisions.
