I believe that the legal system should be a dispute resolution system that
everyone in society can trust and rely on. It needs to punish the guilty, and
provide for restitution to the victims -- so that everyone can see that "justice
was done", and done fairly.
If it fails to do this, the result is inevitably
going to be, individuals or businesses taking "justice" into their own hands:
exacting their own revenge when wronged, and perpetuating a cycle of extra-legal
violence. Without a working, accessible, trustworthy legal system, you
can end up with a hundred years of lynch mobs and blood feuds.
The legal
system is one of the essential cornerstones of civilization. If we allow it to
grow too byzantine, too expensive, too tilted in favor of the ultra-rich and the
megacorps and the lawyers... then the end result will be bad for all of us. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
