Interesting...

The idea would be to detune it to discourage
people "stealing" it to use in mashups.
Altho' that doesn't really stop the insistent .

The A=440 thing...
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, December 13 2012 @ 05:38 PM EST

Here is an interesting little aside on how we got to the A 440 standard.

I'm not a pro, but this time of year I generally get to do Handel's "Messiah" a few times - and I know that, as a bass, I'm going to be much happier at the end of the night if the orchestra tunes to something close to A=428 than if they do A=440.

Most instruments???
Authored by: Wol on Thursday, December 13 2012 @ 06:47 PM EST
A LOT of instruments use a different A - especially older instruments. Look up
"concert pitch" on Wikipedia.

Most instruments not tuned to 440 are tuned to something lower - standard pitch
has risen over the years. However, I suspect I learnt to play on an instrument
tuned to something like 460. Brass band instruments are often tuned to the
higher pitch. One of the higher standards is "Vienna pitch" iirc,
which I think is the one set by the Stadtskappelle Wien. The reason they do
that, is that higher pitches sound brighter.

Obtopic - iirc the standard that says "concert pitch is A = 440" is
ISO 1. Again, wikipedia will confirm this ...

Cheers,
Wol

Tuning, ..A=440...
Authored by: albert on Thursday, December 13 2012 @ 07:11 PM EST
Most instruments are tunable, but some are fixed pitch, like pianos,
vibraphones, etc. I remember a friend had just bought a brand new set of Deagan
vibes. I always tune to A=440, so I asked for a tuning note. My guitar was
flat, so I said (in jest), "You're sharp!" He gave me a funny look. I
said, "Let me see the text on your bars". It was tuned to A=442!
Well, strings (violin family) do tend to play sharp. So much for doing those
gigs at A=440. A whole orchestra could tune to A=442, but wouldn't sound good
backing an A=440 piano!
