You are, of course, correct. Water creates unpredictable results in trajectory
and is therefore a hazard.
I thought the OP was talking about fish that jump out of the water and
suggesting that people try to shoot them while they were still in the air (with
a tool not obviously suited for the job).
Ensuring a backdrop dense enough to stop the projectile is what I was referring
to. For instance, when hunting squirrels, the ideal shot happens when the
squirrel is lined up between the barrel and a backdrop (a tree branch, for
instance) so that the bullet stops after passing through the squirrel.
That's just basic safety and common sense though, so I wonder if the OP was
really speaking out of naivety or whether the reckless abandon was intentional
(Humor seems distant, sometimes).
