Ah, memories of visits to Wales while living in Oxford. It's an absolutely
beautiful country, and I say that coming from what I consider one of the nicest
parts of the US. But the written language drove me crazy when trying to
navigate! In my travels from Finland to Italy, when I saw the name of a town on
a map, I could usually make some speakable word of it, and then look for that on
the roadsigns. The Welsh names often looked like a random, unpronouncible, 15
character string of consonants (few or no vowels!) so that by the time I saw the
sign for the upcoming towns I had already forgotten which one I was looking
for!
Coincidentally I've been researching what company to use to digitize a couple
thousand slides and one of the test slides I've sent in is of my wife's bicycle
parked next to the Croeso i Gymru sign, on her way from Oxford to Abergavenny.
Now that name I can pronounce. Or at least pretend to!
Cheers, and Nadolig llawen to you too!
