Yes you can commit violence with a knife or an axe. And in countries where you
cannot buy assault weapons at the supermarket there is indeed a bit more knife
crime. But not all that much more. And there tends to be more woundings and not
very many deaths. The murder rate in such places is an order of magnitude lower.
That is because it is a lot harder to kill someone with a knife. It is a lot
more personal - you have to get right up close to them - they might try to run
away! They can block you with their hands. They can defend themselves with a
chair. Assuming you can manage to get next to them and stick the blade in you
then have to feel the blade going through the meat and be willing to get covered
in blood. And you need to know some anatomy to know the effective places to
stick the knife to kill someone. Is is easy to kill with a gun. Not so easy with
a knife. You are a lot more likely to wound rather than kill.
And while you can probably manage to kill one person with a knife it is
virtually impossible to commit mass murder with one. If you attack a crowd armed
with a knife you might manage to wound a couple of people and possibly kill
someone if you get a lucky hit, before every other warm body in the
neighbourhood swarms you and takes your knife off you.
And there is no quick and easy suicide for the knife weilder as the police close
in. No bullet to the brain to suddenly end it all. Suicide with a knife is a
messy painful and very protracted business.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
