Three or four hours later, I had read only half the transcript. The pdf link to
the transcript worked if you chopped off everything before the
www1.rolllingstone....but its also a nice touch...links to actual sources
enhance credibility, and perhaps this one is also a turing test.
Taibbi left out the bit about the BOA lawyer nodding his head...pretty clearly
coaching the witness at one point. But, Taibbi has only so much space, so he
has to omit stuff.
Our expert comes across (to me, as an engineer, who has to deal with potentially
observable unknowns in my data) as a liar for sale. I don't need to be an
expert at the math to know about dumbbell effects, false data inputs, false
controls, publication bias, etc. Removing him as a professor for moral
turpitude seems appropriate in his case, but a promotion to dean or president
seems more likely.
Then there's the bit about the uptick in defaults looking a lot like the pin
that burst the housing bubble, not the other way around like he claimed.
And, at Columbia university, he only has access to PUBLISHED data that you or I
could look up? After being paid $1200 per hour? It strains credulity.
Lots of gems in there. Taibbi had to pick and choose.
