Violent demented people will still be violent demented people

Something I've been promoting here and elsewhere since this occurred. However
I'm not convinced that banning assault weapons is the other option. There are
other things that can be done, and indeed there are more than simply two paths.
A comprehensive solution would likely see the most benefit.

1) Force a sane education/training/handling/care/maintenance requirement. With
teeth,
2) Real checks on purchasers,
3) restrict/ban certain weapons (maybe), or create classes of owners, where
highly qualified owners are allowed certain classes of weapons (something we
already do with explosive/flammable chemicals),
4) develop a real health system that covers everyone, fully. So we can,
hopefully, treat/catch people like this.

I'm sure more options could be thought up. The problem is implementing 1,2 &
3 without 4 probably won't fix anything, but only make things harder for
legitimate users of guns. All for the false sense of security it provides. But I
could be wrong. I'd love to be wrong, as 1, 2, and/or 3 are the only likely
outcomes in our political climate.

Based on 9/11, I doubt it. PS. I lost family in 9/11.
