I think that when a witness becomes hard to cross examine it
may show bias that the jury can pick up on. It would be a dangerous game to

If a witness is really an expert in the field he (or she) should be able to
answer
any relevant question with little delay. If necessary they should have
refreshed their memory of difficult bits. They should rarely answer a different
question to that asked and should apologise when thye do.
They should never be "unable to remember".
Or they are not really an expert giving unbiased testimony and therefore
should not be masquarading.
