Basically, there's two problems with sugar.

Firstly, if you have a continuous load of it in your bloodstream, the insulin
response just fails and stops working. So, in type 2 diabetes your blood has
plenty of insulin in it. It's just that it doesn't trigger the mopping up of
sugar like it should.

And secondly, when you have a load of sugar in your blood stream it glycolyses
(is that the right word) your DNA. Whether genes are active or not is controlled
by whether they have sugars attached, and this *should* be controlled by
enzymes. If you've got loads of sugar in your blood, it just sticks itself
anywhere. And "corrupts" all your genes. Of course, the body is used
to this, and when (*if*!) your blood sugar drops, all the fix-up mechanisms cut
in. But if you're always snacking and your blood sugar never drops, this fix-up
never happens.

That's why I've said fasting is a good idea. It drives down blood sugar,
rejuvenates the insulin response, and gives this fix-up mechanism a chance to
cut in. The only thing you have to be careful about (and it IS a biggie) is that
you could trigger a hypoglycaemic episode. NOT good. It shouldn't be a problem
in someone who is fit and healthy, but if you're unfit and overweight...
