The EU Commission's Fine on Microsoft - What's Wrong With It? ~pj

Depends. In some countries its not a crime to escape from jail, and they just let you serve the rest of your term. You can also get released from jail if the law you were accused of breaking is changed. I think the big deal here is that *consumers* don't care anymore, and microsoft is being prosecuted for something that isn't relevant to today's industry.
  • Most of Europe consider escaping from prison to be a criminal offence
  • What Microsoft did is still illegal.
  • European courts generally don't take it well when a company disregards rulings
  • That Microsoft isn't in quite the same dominant position it was doesn't mean that it shouldn't finish the punishment for it's past crimes

Just because you don't consider Microsoft's past abuses to matter doesn't mean the rest of the world won't care. I for one, as an European citizen, am quite happy for the EU Commission to do its job and show it has some backbone and enforce its prior rulings.
