You would be correct in stating that simple but sorely needed correction. You
seem to understand more than you might lead others to think. ;)
On the
other hand I will make a somewhat bold statement about the Theory itself. I
believe that this Theoretical view of the Higgs particle 'giving mass' is
somewhat misguided, for many reasons, and of which I will state 3 simple ones
below.
1) If the energy required to create the Higgs particle is so high,
then how do we as life forms survive in the same environment? Ionizing energy
levels would be required to create such a massive particle, which theoretically
carries, maintains, and/or interacts with (depending on who you read) this Higgs
field. Think about it, can you honestly say you could survive in the same
environment with 125.3 GeV of energy freely floating around creating Higgs
particles? Logically living is such an environment is absurd.
2) When the
Higgs particle decays it gives off lethal gamma ray radiation and high energy
particles (W,Z bosons), so you would not want to even be in the same room with
one, much less with as many as would be required to carry out the Theoretical
Higgs mechanism.
3) Since the Higgs particle decays after only 1.6x10^-22
seconds there would have to be a lot of Higgs particles created each second in
order to maintain enough of them for the interaction with the Higgs Field, that
gives mass, otherwise the field interaction effects would have to travel faster
than the speed of light in order to maintain a uniform field to control that
mass. The locality requirement in itself would present a very violent
environment in which to live. We don't see any variations in mass in experiment,
so the Higgs field must be very stable, but how then can the particle that
carries that force be so unstable? Unless there are enough of them, and then
everywhere, and from (1,2) above you can see just how dangerous that might be.
I find it interesting how pure mathematics can lead to illogical
conclusions of theory, such as these particles being responsible for mass. For
them to do so, we would all be deceased and mortally incapable of building a
collider in order to actually create and measure them. In general I hate the
Anthropic principal as an explanation of anything, but in this case it is a
clear predictor of the falsity of this Higgs-Particle/Mass theory. Many say we
would be dead without it, but I see things exactly the other way around.
