From the link:
You can also think of it this way: If they
“divorced” there would be minimal to no impact to their fortunes in the
foreseeable future. Buyers of Samsung phones will still buy Samsung phones
because they will look and feel very similar and Google services will still be
available through browsers or apps (e.g. Google maps on iOS). Conversely, users
of Google services will continue to use them because they will be available on
Samsung devices, no matter what OS is running. The services Google offers are
independent of Android and are cross-platform. They will make sure they are
available on all major platforms (as they were before and during Android).
Google is far more loyal to Search and Maps and Gmail and YouTube than they are
to Android.
I think he is "wrong". The OS and the Device are not
independent. You can see this when you compare Android to Blackberry and Windows
Phone.
- Android is a good, or good enough, OS to compete with iOS. WP
and BB struggle
- Android runs on the cheapest and the best hardware and
screen resolutions. WP and BB only run on mid-class HW
- Samsung has
complete freedom to customize Android, even fork it if they want. With WP, they
have to take what MS offers. BB is not even an option as it is not for
license.
- The cost of Android development is shared with partners
(FLOSS), or even shouldered completely by Google. WP and BB are licensed for
profit. Samsung would have to shell out the costs plus a handsome profit margin
to MS or BB. In the end, the owner of the OS can cream off all
profit.
So, I think that Samsung might want to take control
over the OS with Tizen. But it is questionable whether they could deliver in the
end. The costs would be very high.

Ok, I can't read the text.
All those facts at the quotation are correct. Google does not need Android, they
need a free OS that won't threaten them. Samsung does not need Android, they
need a free OS that they can customize and not turn into a comodity seler.
So, they got toghether and created such an OS, and named it "Android".
Any free OS would do, so they don't depend on the current arrangment.
And yes, they can't win by just playing at defense. That's why Google is trying
to make the best search engine in the world, and Samsung to make the
(better|most cost effective|cheaper|whatever defines their other ninches) phones
on the world.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
