Observe that once the 13th Amendment limited (not abolished!) slavery to use
solely as a punishment for a crime of which someone has been duly convicted,
there has been an ongoing regimen of laws against merely being associated with
various forms of contraband. When such a law wears out or breaks, it's not
usually very long until a new one is ginned up in its stead. The Controlled
Substances Act followed Leary v. United States which vacated the Marihuana Tax
Act which followed the repeal of Prohibition (after a gap to deal with that
Great Depression thing), Prohibition itself being the national codification of
several state laws inspired by the opium ban (aka looking at white women while
Chinese).
So, I believe drugs laws are here to stay, at least until a
replacement stands up (like, oh I don't know, how about receiving infringing copies of works?) [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
