This is the remnant of former Linux vendor Caldera
Systems, an entity
founded in 1994 by Ransom Love and
Bryan Sparks. They acquired the
UNIX Server
Software and Professional Systems divisions of The
Santa Cruz
Operation (a UNIX vendor at the time) in 2000
and began doing business under
the name "The SCO
Group". In 2003 they filed
suit against IBM
alleging various and sundry things in
court filings, and various and sundry
Linux evils in public
filings.
In 2007, after several adverse court
decisions, they filed for Chapter
11
bankruptcy protection, which stayed all their lawsuits
(including the
one against IBM). While in Chapter 11, they
sold off all their
remaining
business operations to unXis in 2011, retaining only
various
physical assets and the lawsuits (having disposed of
or abandoned
certain de minimis assets in 2009). Shortly
after the
sale to unXis, they officially
changed their
name from "The SCO Group" to "The TSG Group".
They
filed in August of last
year to convert the
bankruptcy to Chapter 7, and that's where they are
today, a
business with (as they themselves told the
Bankruptcy
Court) "no proposed future operations", still hanging on
to
their dream of a big litigation payout from their 2003
lawsuit against IBM
(which they are now urging the court to
release from the bankruptcy stay and
re-open).
