Nokia lost my family (and me) yet on featurephones
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, May 09 2013 @ 11:39 AM EDT
It used to be that Nokia phones were great, and no other worked as well. So we
used to pay a premium to get them.

But yet when we used featurephones, Nokia's quality got downhill in hardware and
software, and the competitors got slightly better. There was no reason to pay a
premium anymore, but they were still more expensive.

I guess most people buying phones from Nokia do so because they are afraid to
try the competition. I know I was for a time.

Three Sammies in my house, and soon to be a fourth.

I *LOVE* my Note 2. BEST phone I have EVER owned.

I used to buy ...

Nokia communicators, smartphones long before the term was invented, they were
perfect for my job (sysadmin with many webservers to support) allowing me ssh
access on the move with a real keyboard and 80 character wide display,
fantastic. They lost my trade before the Microsoft nonsense I used to use
Nav4All on my communicators ( I bought at least 6 of the latest for family and
colleagues) but then Nokia bought the company and stopped the service. In return
they promised free Nokia maps but this never made it to the communicator, their
top of the range phone. After about 6 months of repeatedly emailing and finally
receiving confirmation they had no intention of ever honouring their promise I
bought an HTC desire, I thought I'd hate the on screen keyboard but quickly
adjusted and I've never looked back. Now on a Galaxy 3 with a Galaxy Tab 10 for
when I need a bigger screen.
I would never buy another Nokia product they were already a bunch of lying
thieves, and after doing a deal with even nastier people I'd rather chew off my
own feet!

My 2nd cell phone was a Nokia and it worked well. However, these days, I go
with Android phones only. So, if Nokia doesn't have an Android phone, they can
count me out as a customer.

BTW, I tend to get a new phone every 5 years or so. I bought my Google Nexus
One about 3 years ago, so I'll have to see what turns up with Android phones in
2 years time.

I have a Nokia Phone
Authored by: cassini2006 on Thursday, May 09 2013 @ 12:24 PM EDT

I bought my Nokia phone a long-time ago now, well before the Elop / Smart Phone craze. It is a great and durable phone.

I can't imagine purchasing a Windows phone.

My cell phone provider doesn't think much of Nokia
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, May 09 2013 @ 01:18 PM EDT

Coincidentally, I dropped in on my local cell phone provider to look at the latest phones. When I learned they would allow me an early upgrade for only a small penalty, I got all excited and complete the decision to get a new phone. We looked at the latest Samsung Galaxy, Note II, and HTC 1, then I spotted a Nokia Windows phone in the corner and innocently asked him to tell me about it.

He said "Oh - we don't sell many of those" and returned to the discussion about the others I had been looking at. That's all he had to say about it. Then I admitted to him that I wouldn't be caught dead with a Windows phone, and had a little laugh for myself.

Anyhow, I have pretty much made up my mind to get a Note II, as the large screen suits my habit of spending a lot of time reading the news or Groklaw on a phone in a coffee shop. Only one thing makes me hesitate. I came across a website during my research on that phone that predicts the Note III will be coming out on May 27th. I am pondering whether I should wait to see if this speculation comes true.

Microsoft left their loyal beta testers in the lurch
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, May 09 2013 @ 01:35 PM EDT

Those poor souls who got sucked into being beta testers for Microsoft when they bought the Win Phone 7, only to see Windows Phone 8 upgrade pass them by, were promised a 7.8 upgrade that still hasn't arrived for the vast majority.

Got an AT&T Lumia 900? Your Windows Phone 7.8 update should arrive soon

The story of Windows Phone 7.8 is a long and slightly sad one. It’s the update nobody really wanted, as anyone who owned a Windows Phone 7 device would have preferred a full Windows Phone 8 update, plus it took so long to arrive, many thought it had been forgotten about. Even though Microsoft confirmed the software was still being worked on in November last year, and the first versions didn’t start to appear until the end of January, and it seems there are still those who haven’t had their phones upgraded. Nokia Lumia 900 owners contracted to AT&T are among them, but some good news came through this week, saying Windows Phone 7.8 was ready and waiting for them through the Zune software.

I'm sure by now many of those unappreciated beta testers have already given up on NokiaSoft and bought themselves a real phone. Whether it be Android, Apple or even a BlackBerry, there are endless choices today in comparison to which their Windows phone is nothing but a bad joke. I doubt they will be buying another Windows phone after having being treated so shabbily.

Yup, we had multiple Nokia 8260 phones. They were great tiny little bar phones,
on AT&Ts TDMA network, before they went GSM. Of course that was before the
smartphone wars; before the empire.
