When did Einstein get his award for relativity?
Never.
His Nobel Prize was for the photoelectric effect, 1921.
And when
did he do the actual
work? 20 years earlier?
The work was done in
and around 1905, 16 years earlier. The followup work, leading to quantum
mechanics and beyond, was current at the time of the award.--- --Bill.

Accorded to testament the prize should be awarded for work the current year. It
is not really possible to do, and I am certain that Alfred Nobel new this. It
takes many many years before one can see if the work is important enough to be
worth a Nobel prize. You can see the problem in the Price for Peace and for
Literature. As think they are doing the best they can.
