Oracle locking the stable after...
Authored by: complex_number on Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 08:15 AM EDT
developers.slashdot.org

The link is referring to a change made in the MySql documentation license. It is no longer GPL'd. I guess that Oracle will soon start locking it away and charging for access to it.

If there was ever a more compelling reason to ditch MySQL and move to Postgres of MariaDB then I don't know of one.

At least the OLD versions are still GPL'd and there is not a lot that Oracle can do about it.

some Questions that spring to mind:-
1) will Oracle start charging distro's for having it in their repositories?
2) Will Oracle start law suits against the various Authors who are/have written books about MySQL? (copyright Violation)

I did question the reasons for RH to drop MySQL from RHEL-7 but now I am right behind them.

Google Patents Walking stick with a camera
Authored by: complex_number on Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 10:34 AM EDT
Well Doh!
How many walking sticks are there available that have a Camera mount (aka Tripod
camera mount thread) already included in the device.
I have one such device and most of the time it has a small Nikon camera mounted
on it.

Well done USPTO for allowing the patenting of something that already exists.

Microsoft partners with Samsung, HP
Authored by: squib on Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 11:42 AM EDT
Microsoft partners with Samsung, HP Microsoft partners with Samsung, HP to help stop Windows piracy in China
Hewlett-Packard and Samsung Electronics will now ensure that their PCs in China are installed with licensed Windows and Office software as part of new agreements signed with Microsoft meant to fight piracy. Microsoft announced the agreements Wednesday as the company brought its latest anti-piracy campaign to the Chinese city of Nanjing. Since December, Microsoft's "Keep it Real" campaign has been educating the Chinese public on security risks of using unlicensed Windows software.
What about those people that want to avoid the risk of using 'properly' licensed M$ software buy running Linux instead? The consumer should be able to choose the risk he wants to take without paying the M$ tax don't you think?

Microsoft-Nokia Advanced Talks Recently Broke Down
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 05:19 PM EDT
linky
A plus factor in the negotiations was the possibility of Microsoft using offshore cash to fund a deal. The company has about $66 billion of cash held in offshore subsidiaries—a stockpile that would be tough to bring back to the U.S. without incurring a large tax bill.

The two sides held their discussions in London and were close to an oral agreement about a combination, one of the people said.

How To Uninstall McAfee Antivirus by John McAfee himself
Authored by: squib on Wednesday, June 19 2013 @ 05:30 PM EDT
As this is something I have been asked on numerous occasions I thought it would be useful to post John McAfee personal advice.

Boing Boing (from which I sourced this) suggests it NSFW but in my view it isn't any less safe than the lunch box my wife packs for me – err... has any one got any Alka-Seltzer?

A few articles a couple ago (court ruling Genes) Re: 2 grandmothers with cancer... News!

Now, that we own our genes then research can go forward with various creative solutions to health problems (without the fear of infringement on that type of biological patent).

Here is an example of such a direction (where folks that are trying it are having some success).

Interview with Dr Thomas Seyfried (25 years at Yale and Boston College, results of years of research with team of over 20, etc) see:

DEC, Microsoft, Cutler and NT. Is it true?
Authored by: pgmer6809 on Thursday, June 20 2013 @ 02:33 AM EDT
There is a thread on slashdot discussing PDP-11's once the DEC flagship computer. here. In that thread there is this comment by Anonymous (NOT by me!):

> Microsoft hired him to lead a team that designed Windows NT.

>> Wow. Way to re-write history. No, I'm afraid that's not how it went down. Dave Cutler developed what ultimately is NT while working for Digital Equipment Corporation. DEC wasn't interested in Dave's creation. Dave unethically and possibly illegally shopped it around. Microsoft was interested. Dave and his entire engineering team left DEC, and went to work for Microsoft, and actually, literally stole DEC's intellectual property and eventually released it as Windows NT. Yes, I am saying that Windows NT is the intellectual property of Digital Equipment Corporation, and Microsoft never paid DEC a red nickel for it.

On a personal note, I am divided about Mr. Cutler. Windows NT might have been the best Windows ever, and NT itself isn't a terrible platform. What Microsoft did to it is >>unfortunate for users and administrators everywhere, but it essence, NT wasn't terrible. Cutler is an impressive developer... quite amazing... yet it sickens me that what he and Microsoft did was insanely unethical, and no one noticed. Microsoft's main flagship product was STOLEN, and no one noticed, and this is hardly ever acknowledged.

I have no idea if this is accurate or not. I remember it as Microsoft hiring Cutler to rescue NT development when DEC refused to develop a 32 bit real time OS, and Cutler got fed up.

Francois de La Rochefoucauld ( a famous french epigramist) once wrote that, "behind every great fortune there is a crime." If the above is true then behind Microsoft's fortune, there are at least 3 crimes.

Is there any way of ascertaining the truth of the above?

Regards, pgmer6809
