What is it with the US and Beer?
Authored by: complex_number on Tuesday, July 02 2013 @ 03:09 AM EDT
Linky

I know that many in the US can trace their ancestry back to the Puritans etc but sometimes the laws relating to Beer etc are clearly an 'ass'.

In this case those agents should be sent back to school to learn the difference between booze and water.

When I lived in the US I had to remember which state I was in (MA or NH) because of the vary different laws. Even with a full head of Grey hair, I would be 'carded' regularly. One incident with a BAT agent almost got me arrested because he refused to accept that my UK passport was a valid form of identity.(I'd just returned to the US from a trip to Brazil).
My neighbours were also astonished that I would expose my children to seeing adults drink 'booze'. When I told them that we'd taken the children around a distillery in Scotland where they'd had a small taste of Scotch, they almost called child protection services. The fact that the kids to their credit all said 'we hate the stuff' probably saved the day.

Ubuntu & 'apt-get' are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which is of course, "42" or is it 1.618?

NewsPicks commentary here
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, July 02 2013 @ 12:00 PM EDT
Oh dear,

according to german law there is a main suspect named
Keith Alexander, born dec 2nd 1951 in Syracuse, New York for

illegally tapping millions od data from german citizens, for
eavesdropping german politicians being charged for

"data espionage" (three years in prison),
"interception of data" (two years in prison) - and maybe
"Intelligence agents activity" (ten years in prison).

-> StGB ยงยง 99, 202a, 202b

In a nutshell, these laws were established during the cold
war and are 'strict'. Ironically german courts might be
forced to apply them on allies?!?

Nevertheless I wouldn't bet a penny for the extradition of
Mr Alexander to germany if he would be found guilty...

The Bing challenge: with iOS 7 and Windows 8.1, search could be Microsoft's new platform

"...moving away from web-based search engines..."

In their dreams. Aren't all search engines web-based?

A crappy OS, with an 'integrated' crappy search engine, and everything you do funnels through Microsoft. What's not to like?

As for Apple, I have some advice:

"He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas."

Seriously, other than guilt be association, I don't see Apple losing a lot if this fails. In fact, I wonder what the deal is. Does MS pay them, or is there a backroom agreement?
