Your statement about Oracle feeling that they own the copyrights to various
other things related to java is irrelevant. A language cannot be protected by

You forget one simple fact: SUN OWNED JAVA!
So yes Virginia you can copyright a programming language. Java was a closed,
proprietary language until Sun decided to open it up. Sun sued Microsoft for
corrupting Java and won the case.
It was their language lock, stock and barrel.
To gain a larger foot hold, encourage greater adoption, Sun, once Java was
mature, decided to open it up. This was largely do to combat the threat of .NET
from Microsoft.
