It is better to use 'they', rather than: 'she/he', or 'she', as it does not
introduce gender where it is not relevant, and is more accurate: as some people
are born being either neither gender or with bits belonging to both genders.
I was using 'gender appropriate' language way before this 'political
correctness' started up. The use of 'they', 'their', and 'them' applies to one
or more people (contrary to what a lot of people think!).
Also the use of 'one' as a pronoun can avoid unnecessarily specifying gender for
an individual. 'One can use language in many ways.' is for more elegant and
focuses people on the use of language, rather than something like 'He/she can
use language in many ways.' which is very clumsy and emphasises gender
neutrality where gender is simply not relevant.
It is plain daft to use 'she' to mean either a male or a female, as it is
associated very strongly with females. Traditionally 'he' can refer to both,
but that usage today is only a little less daft. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
