Incoming car analogy nitpick....
First of all the Vehicle API is largely made up of things which were patented at
one
time and only were widely-adopted when IP rights expired. (That might be
more of
an argument against long copyright terms.)
Second, (as far as I know), there's no interoperability standard, only base
government regulations and common convergence. As a real world example,
Ford
put the horn button on the turn stalk in the 80s and still sold a lot of
Mustangs.
LIkewise, the high-beam button used to be on the floor and only gradually
migrated
to the stalk in the US. Or numerous other examples.
Finally, Google had no freedom to change things because they rely on Java's
development tools. So they weren't implementing the "Vehicle API",
they were
implementing the "Toyota API" to make their vehicle just like a Toyota
in all
respects. I don't think that's deserving of copyright protection, but let's not
pretend
they weren't cloning Java as-is.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
