I have been a programmer since 1962 and am confused by the jargon. To me,
cosine has one interface and write_character has another. Apparently these are
called methods, not functions. I would call a Taylor series the method for the
cosine function. There was some testimony that there are 8693 methods. If each
has its own calling sequence, then there are 8693 interfaces? Or, if they are
being combined, then why isn't there just one grand interface, or 36 or 38?
I still do not know what a class is. I think in terms of routines consisting of
machine instructions.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The reason being that in Java, the term "interface" has a very precisely defined
meaning. It does not appear at this time that Oracle would like that meaning to
be identical with "API". Perhaps Google would like otherwise. But that is up to
Judge Alsup to decide, and I think it best for us here to continue bandying
about the nebulous term "API" until he does.
