APIs a clear analogy
Authored by: Yossarian on Wednesday, April 25 2012 @ 01:53 AM EDT
Not exactly.

Some connectors work much better than others, but
parameter passing is about as efficient regardless of API.
The only exception is that in some cases passing an address is
much better than copying the data, but that's an old idea.

Because of this property there are patents for connectors.
Just Google "USB patent" and see an example.

APIs don't exist
Authored by: Ian Al on Wednesday, April 25 2012 @ 04:52 AM EDT
Oracle pointed out that neither the Java software nor the computer uses them.

The API's are thousands of different documents to explain to a programmer what
words and phrases must be used to get a function out of the function library to
work.

It's like the instruction manual for a video recorder. Except, if it was that
bad, no programmer would use it. API's are not written to make it easier for the
programmer to use. They are written to get programmers to use them.

Software Patents: It's the disclosed functions in the patent, stupid!
