Nokia downgraded to 'junk'
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, April 24 2012 @ 08:43 PM EDT
That's just the thing. It all depends on the success of WP8 (or whatever
Microsoft will call it).

IMO WP8 will likely have more OEMs and application developers picking it up than
WP7 ever did, if we assume what the presses/rumours say about WP8 are true
(based on NT kernel, allows C/C++ "native" applications, WinRT,
gaining more telco backing, more flexibility ...etc). I suspect Microsoft
wouldn't need Nokia any more by the time WP8 is ready. Having said that, I doubt
that WP8 will have any impact on Apple like the telcos seem to think, even if
WP8 is more successful than WP7. I also think its impact on Android sales will
not big enough to derail it (though it will probably be bigger than on Apple).
But from Microsoft's perspective, they have already gotten what they wanted out
of Nokia (patents, marketing, hype, killed Symbian, killed Meego, killed Nokia
services, not picking up Android,... etc). If Nokia survives long enough to see
success with WP8, it will find itself surrounded by other OEMs selling WP8
devices. I suspect Nokia will do worst in such a scenario than if they had used
Android a year ago surrounded by Android OEMs (due to dwindling resources of all
kinds caused by what has happened over the last year or so). If Nokia didn't
pick up WP7 and waited for WP8 (while fixing up the company without burning
products), it probably would have had a better chance (assuming of course WP8
doesn't flop :p).

On the other hand, if WP8's "success" turns out to be like WP7's as
well (for whatever reason), then it's all over for Microsoft this round, with or
without Nokia. For Nokia, I'd be surprised if their current management survives
a failure of WP8 (assuming the company survives at all). The thing is, Microsoft
can afford to fail and they are prepared to do so. Worst case scenario, there
will be management changes, but the company will likely still survive (as they
have survived the many failure of their consumer products before). Beyond this
round, there may or may not be dire consequences for Microsoft, but I don't
think Nokia (with its depleted resources) would be of help at that point any
more than other OEMs. I suspect Microsoft will likely look to current PC OEMs
next to form "major partnerships" to produce the devices.
