If a witness recognises that they've just been asked "Have you stopped
beating your wife?" is there any way that they are allowed (without it

In a situation like this, the more you fight, the more you make the question
stick in the mind of the jury. You need to do the opposite. You want to reduce
the impact as much as you can. Silence is your friend.
I think the best way to answer is to be as short as possible, a simple yes or no
or I don't know without further explanation is best. Then the lawyer will be
forced to move on and the question will be forgotten. On cross exam your lawyer
will make the truth comes out if need be. Or he will focus on something else and
the complexity of the case will dilute the impact of the question into
nothingness.
