There are two parts to these sorts of literary works.
There is the source code.
This is a "work as a whole"
you could have several lumps of source code,
which represent two distinct applications/products
which might be two whole works
You might have some source code re-use between those two things
It's still whole works for each of the complete sets of code necessary to
compile the object code.
It is represented as source code, or Object code, where Object code is an
computer readable representation of the source code.
The Other part is the Book (such as a specification), or Books (such as an API
*and* a Language specification) each of which is a "work as a whole"
There is well established history, precedent, constitutional law, analysis and
procedure for dealing with copyright infringement in each of these forms of
expression.
all those issues address which bits are ideas, which bits are 'structural',
which bits not get protection.,
It really is no more complicated than that, whatever Oracle say it is or
isn't.
Once you see past their shell games, you will see that all they have a is a Pea
(Rangecheck) that they don't want you to look at too closely.
