Google (which has lawyers) did NOT depend on the Patent
protection of OpenJDK, because they did NOT use OpenJDK.
They appear to have depended on the facts around Harmony,
specifically that Sun knew what they were doing, and blessed
it. Why should they think it would change in the future?
They have on record the statements of the company CEO.
And the original reason I posted was that the link you
pointed to that "explained" it (by someone without a law
degree) flat out said GPL 2 does NOT provide patent
protection. And he stated it as a fact with no backup
reasoning. We both agree it may or may not. In the legal
world (from what I've gathered here) that's a big
difference.
