In the Construction industry the instructions you use to build a building are
called the Construction Documents.

They generally consist of two major Components, The Plans(blueprints) and the
Specifications. The Specifications are divided into 50 divisions based on the
material, component or trade to be used (Wood, Metal, Openings, Waterproofing,
Plumbing etc.) The Divisions are further divided into sections which describe
different types of things relating to the division (Wood Doors, Metal Doors,
Windows, Storefront etc.) These sections are usually given numbers taken from a
master list called MasterFormat which assigns a 6 digit number to each one with
the first two digits being the Division Number. Each Section contains a
description of the requirements for work that is covered, in a standard format.
The language from one section to another is consistent and often repetitive.

However no list can contain all of the different variations so in most large
projects it is necessary to make some of your own sections.

You are not required to follow MasterFormat, and could make up your own system.
While MasterFormat includes it's own standard sections (the description of the
work covered) there are competing versions of the Master Specifications and some
companies have developed their own internal versions. Some mix and match as
necessary.

It seems to me MasterFormat (or the earlier Uniform Construction Index) are much
more like an API than the Blueprints. The Specifications are like an edited
Library, including all of the standard things you are using plus the special
stuff you need for this particular job (Private Interfaces?).

Blueprints are much more like a program which shows where things go and then you
refer to the Specifications for exactly what it is.

The Specifications by themselves do not do anything, you can not build a house
with a Specification alone. You need The Plans (A Program) to show you where to
put stuff.

The correspondence between API and MasterFormat and Specifications is not exact
but to call an API Blueprints is just wrong. The API is more like Home Depot.

That assumes that the architect didn't mess up, and have brick walls that are an
eighth of an inch thick, or 2 inch pipes in a floor that is 1.5 inches thick.

Maybe with CAD/CAM those "errors" don't occur, but I saw enough of
them back when I worked construction.
