I am beginning to see this in a similar way. If, say you were
composing an essay in any language, you have pretty much the
entire dictionary available to you to frame your
sentences. You also have the grammatical rules that will
always apply regardless of what you do. To chop an API into
essential and non-essential bits seems equivalent to
differentiating the vowels from the consonants - not
particularly helpful in forming most meaningful words (not to
mention sentences).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Perhaps they are pointing it out - by following along and showing how ridiculous
it becomes.
At my evening class, I try to get the students to find out themselves what the
correct way is when they make a mistake by gently pushing them in the right
direction (if necessary showing the absurdity of an answer if taken to logical
conclusions) instead of telling them directly as they are more likely to learn
(as they made the discovery, they will more likely remember it).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The JAVA programming language is an extensible language much like natural
languages. So trying to define the core APIs is like trying to define the core
phrases in the English language. Furthermore what might have been identified as
core in 1996 would have changed in any extensible language in the years since
1996.

It's very simple, anything in java.* or javax.* is part of
the core java APIs, by definition and naming convention.
If sun had anything proprietary and optional, it would be in
sun.*
Oh look, there's the proprietary stuff...
If they don't lose on copyrightability of the entire API,
it's a nonsense anyway, but those APIs are clearly part of
the java language, and so should be free for anyone to use
or implement.
I have had enough of this carving nonsense, it's *all* core. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
