Well, if those are the only two choices, just
shoot me now.
And they are not. Google is Google. Whatever
happens in this case, they'll solve it one way
or another.
I keep in mind that Android's position in the
ecosystem is now established. There are more
choices once one is a worldwide success than
when one is starting out.
And I also recall that one of the chief reasons for developing Android was to
avoid being stuck with Microsoft. I don't think that has changed or ever will.
The idea is an *open* phone. If Java terms had been as tight as Oracle now
claims they were, I'm sure Google
would have chosen something else entirely. And I
think they'd invent their own language if necessary
rather than use .NET.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

C# and .NET are direct descendants of Visual J++/JVM
They appeared complete with translation tools to turn J++/Java into C# almost
immediately after Microsoft lost to Sun for polluting Java.
Everything else you mention is the continuation of the 'extend' part of the
strategy that got them sued in the first place. Everything you mention for
language extensions comes post C#/J++ split.
.NET is a failure because why would you code to a VM when you have the native
API right to hand and that is the platform you are coding for and the only
platform on which the VM reliably runs (aside from the fact that c# like basic
is a neat way to 'scribble' ideas quickly).
Mono is rightly pilloried for trying to extend MS Development paradigms to other
platforms.
People don't trust Microsoft because they lie about their APIs, they lie to
their partners, and they cripple their own software to break software they
decide to be 'in competition'
It has ever been thus and it is only MS monopoly position that has sustained it
beyond it's inevitable decay.
I mean no disrespect to MS researchers.
Disclaimer: I have a poor memory, but I "learnt" Java on Vis.J++[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Does anyone remember the rousing success MS Visual Basic was?
No?
When there are no good choices fo the FLOSS community, someone will make one.
See Python, and a whole ton of others, going right back to GNU.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
