The situation is really no different than someone working for DOD in a role that
requires some level of security clearance.
Following the rules about _no_ discussion is explained up front... and there are
penalties for non-compliance.
If the juror did not feel that they could follow the rules, they should have
said so during jury selection, and been excused at that time. IANAL, so don't
have any insight into how common that would actually be.

The judge made it very clear at the outset and throughout the trial what the
rules are, and every potential witness was asked directly whether they
would abide by them. They all said yes. Luckily, the discussion with the
juror's inventor spouse was irrelevant to the proceedings, was extremely
limited in scope, and was determined by both parties and the judge not to
