However, RIM reported a profit, while Nokia reported a loss. That means that RIM isn't under the same sort of short term financial pressure as Nokia is. Blackberry market share has declined relative to iPhone and Android, but it's still far better than the negligible share that Nokia has for their MS Windows Phone products.

RIM could run a healthy business without "beating" Apple or the Android makers. Indeed, they could try getting out of the handset business and exist as a service on top of iPhone or Android.

Nokia on the other hand has place all their bets on MS Windows Phone "beating" either iPhone or Android in direct competition. There's no back-up plan for that, unless they abandon their partnership with Microsoft (and for example, become another Android vendor).

So at this point, RIM appears to have options for recovery, while Nokia seems to have no viable survival plan that doesn't involve completely reversing their current course.
