Dr. Mitchell's Testimony
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, May 17 2012 @ 07:28 PM EDT

people don't think of what they are doing when they plan their trip through the aisles as "running a simulation". If anything, the example shows how what people do is the simpler thing called "pattern matching"

By coincidence, I just got back from the supermarket. I certainly wasn't "running a simulation". It was the real thing, and I now have the groceries in my cupboard to prove it. I know the store well, and where everything is located. While I was shopping, I was matching the pattern of things I bought with the pattern in my brain of what I wanted and where it would be found. The patterns matched.

Dr. Mitchell's Testimony
Authored by: Steve Martin on Friday, May 18 2012 @ 07:19 AM EDT

I hope what they ask to be read back includes the cross examination by Google too.

The Judge told the attorneys from both sides to get together and pick out the portion to be read back:

Judge: I have another note. "We request the transcript of a portion of Dr. Mitchell's testimony be read to us. It concerns the topic of pattern matching versus simulated execution, and occurred late on May 9 and early on May 10."

I think you should be able to isolate the relevant parts for the jury and read them, if you guys can agree on it. Let me know when that's done.

Google: We'll try to do that, Your Honor.

Judge: How long will it take you?

Oracle: Maybe ten minutes.

Judge: That short?

Google: I think maybe it'll take a little longer.

Judge: Let's say 2:20. Remember, you have to reach an exact agreement.

So I'm guessing that Google will get their input on that selection.
