1) The patents were not important and Sun told world+dog that
anybody could use Java for any purpose as long as they didn't
call it Java without going through the hoops.

Because if you want to work around every software patent in existence you will
spend your entire life reading patents, and no time actually writing any code.
The patent office is
currently granting in
excess of 14,000 software patents a year. Assuming you work 50 weeks a year
at 40 hours, that's
2000 hours a year, so you would have to read 7 patents an
hour, full time, just to keep up with the new ones.
Since the patent office
apepars to have no idea what is obvious when implementing software, avoiding
