There's a big difference in drawing logic diagrams
and writing code that doesn't have flawed logic.
I've never seen a class that expects students to learn a language in a week.
Total hooey. Any school propounding you can learn a language in a week isn't
worthy of giving out programming degrees.
Learning the words forming the basis of a language does not equate to learning
the language. If that were true, you could teach 13 major languages in a single
semester in a single class, and a person could learn every conceivable
programming language in the course of a few semesters.
Srsly? A week?
Writing software is easy. Writing software that: works, does what it is designed
to do, and doesn't do what it isn't designed to do takes years of learning,
skill, and practice.

Learing a computer language is one thing. Using it to solve
problems and build systems using efficient data structures,
TCP/IP coding, creating useful libraries, creating useful
class organizations, developing reliable interprocess
communication systems on distributed processing systems
is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

To achieve the level of mastery I aim for in a new language and environment
would probably take me at least 3 months depending on many factors, although I
would expect to have a simple program up and running within the first 24 hours.
Do not forget it is more than just learning syntax, you also need to be familiar
with its programming idioms and to have a reasonable knowledge of relevant
supporting libraries - not to mention: understanding its best practices and
getting to grips with the appropriate IDE.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
