Those who work in the area of mathematical physics tend to believe deep down
that mathematics does indeed tell reality what to do. If your business is
searching for simple underlying mathematical principles that govern the
behaviour of reality it helps if you believe that they exist. It is very hard to
find something whose existence you doubt.
Applied mathematicians and experimental phyicists are working only with
previously discovered mathematical principles and not looking for new ones. They
can afford the sophistry of believing only in inexact models and doubting the
existence of perfect mathematical descriptions. It is the trendy attitude to
have in this cynical age. Of course, we really have no way of knowing if a
perfect mathematical description exists ... until we find it. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
