Of course Oracle claims OpenJDK as their "reference"
implementation while continuing to distribute the
incompatible (and proprietary) binary version.
I had some problems with using the non-Sun version of Java
with Eclipse IDE a few years back, and Ubuntu's repo'd
version of Eclipse had a big lag and jUnit incompatibility
that made me swear next time I installed Eclipse I'd take
the tar'd up version and use Sun's libraries.
But day before yesterday I was looking at the Ubuntu
repository for Precise Pangolin, and lo, everything seemed
to be up to date and no (visible) red flags.
So I reinstalled from there. I suspect being able to make a
consistent use of OpenJDK will make life easier for all (or
most) of us.
