Slashdot used to be the place to find out the news first
about anything enterprise, UNIX, Free Software and new and
interesting things. It slowly started turning towards a
Windows-centric worldview, reporting in line with that. At
the same time, the number of trolls and flamers started
climbing rapidly.
It more or less became more work than it was worth to try to
sift the wheat from the chaff.
LinuxToday served in its stead for a long time, until they
fired Carla Schroder. Bad move, that.
I note that none of the sites on my toolbar existed more
than 10 years ago except LWN.net, UserFriendly, Internet
Archive, freshmeat and DistroWatch. Oops, scratch
freshmeat, it is now freecode.com
Right now, for tech news, I rely on Groklaw, Techdirt, LXer
and a daily headline scan of the New York Times (I should go
back to BBC again) and the weather on NWS (weather.gov),
with an occasional scan of LWN.net.
The above aggregators lead me to places that I should
probably review myself. I end up on certain sites fairly
often: Linuxaria, Phoronix, Engadget, Ars Technica,
LinuxforDevices, Schneier on Security, and EFF. I'm glad you
asked. One more thing to put on my to-do list. The Internet
changes so fast that it takes discipline to keep up with it.
But it detracts from discipline because of its mesh nature.
It's hard to see structure.

Slashdot has become a terrible place to get actual technology news. It's
mostly political stories and science news now. IMO the political bent attracts
trolls and flamers and shills. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
